The Brooklyn Tip-Tops were part of the short-lived Federal League of professional baseball from 1914 to 1915. The team was named by owner Robert Ward, who owned the Tip Top Bakery. They were sometimes informally called the Brooklyn Feds or BrookFeds due to being the Brooklyn team of the Federal League. The Tip Tops played in old Washington Park, which the Brooklyn Dodgers had abandoned after the 1912 season to move to Ebbets Field. On September 19, 1914, Tip-Top Ed Lafitte threw the only no-hitter in Federal League history, beating the Kansas City Packers 6-2. They came to an end when the Federal League reached a deal with the National and American leagues that disbanded all its teams. The Hilldale Giants were the powerhouse team of the Eastern Colored League. Their homebase was a suburb of Philadelphia, called Darby. In 1924 the Giants lost the first Colored World Series to the Kansas City Monarchs in a 10-game series, but avenged their defeat the following year, beating the Monarchs in six games. At the time their infield was anchored by future Hall of Famers Pop Lloyd and Judy Johnson. They also featured the great battery of lefty Nip Winters and Biz Mackey, the dean of catchers. Led by a young cross-handed slugger from Mobile, Alabama named Henry Aaron, the clowns won the Negro American League championship in 1952. It was a best-of-seven match-up between the Negro American League champion the Kansas City Monarchs and the Negro National League Homestead Greys. In a six-game series, the Monarchs swept the Grays four games to none, with two additional games not counted in the standings. It was the first World Series between eastern and western Negro Leagues champions since 1927 and gave bragging rights across baseball as World Champs. Many say the Monarchs at this time could have dismantled any current major league roster. It was a best-of-nine match-up between the Negro League National champion Kansas City Monarchs and the Eastern Colored League champion Hilldale giants. The Monarchs narrowly defeated Hilldale 5 games to 4, with one tie game. It was the first World Series between the respective champions of the NNL and ECL in the second year of existence for the ECL, but no agreement could be reached in 1923 for a post-season series, owing primarily to unresolved disputes between the leagues. Five members of the Baseball Hall of Fame participated in the series: Biz Mackey, Judy Johnson, and Louis Santop played for Hilldale, while Bullet Rogan and Jose Mendez played for the Monarchs. In addition, Monarchs owner J.L. Wilkinson was also inducted into the Hall. Their pitching staff was lead by junk-baller Luis Tiant, Sr. On the offensive side they were led by future American League all-star Minnie Minoso. Trailing 4–3 in the top half of the ninth inning, with two outs, George Brett hits a 2-run homer to take the lead. However, the umpires ruled that the amount of pine tar on the bat exceeded the amount allowed and nullified the home run, ending in a Yankees win. The Royals would protest the game, and league president Lee MacPhail upheld the protest, ordering the game to be restarted from the point of Brett’s home run. The Royals would go on to win.
