KANSAS | ROCK CHALK
The "Rock Chalk" chant is one of the most recognizable collegiate chants in the entire country. Known and loved by Jayhawks everywhere, the chant expresses school pride and spells inevitable doom at the end of a sporting event for opponents. The chant was first adopted by the university's science club while returning to Lawrence by train. In need of a rousing yell, the club and professor E.H.S. Bailey came up with "Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, Go KU". This eventually turned into "Rock Chalk, Jayhawk, Go KU" to pay tribute to the limestone that is found in parts of western Kansas and on Mount Oread, where the university is located.
